Wilma Riepe

December 4, 1914 — February 1, 2003

Wilma Kathryn Riepe, 88 of the Kensington in Ft. Madison, formerly of rural Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Fr. Timothy Sheedy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral Home with family present from 6-8:00 P.M. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. and a Vigil prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be designated in the name of Wilma Kathryn Riepe or Crossroads Hospice.

Wilma was born December 4, 1914 in New London, Iowa the daughter of William and Kathryn (Slattery) Brandmeyer. She graduated from St. Alphonsus High School and attended nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Burlington. On February 1, 1937 she was united in marriage to Ora O. Reipe in St. Patrick, Missouri.

She was a farm wife working along side her husband on the farm southeast of Mt. Pleasant. She was a faithful member of the St. Alponsus Catholic Church, Alter and Rosary Society and the Daughters of Isabella. In 1935 Wilma and her mother started the LBS Club ( Let’s Be Socialable) for neighborhood women, which still meets today. For many years she served chicken at the church tent during Old Threshers. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, refinishing furniture and helping the grandchildren with their 4-H projects. Wilma made quilts and afghans for the grandchildren as well as other sewing projects for the church. Her travels included Germany, Nova Scotia, Florida and the Western United States. A special memory for her was seeing the Pope on his visit to Loving History Farms in 1979.

Survivors include her daughter Mary Frances Smith and husband Larry of Mt. Pleasant, IA, sister-in-law Dolores Riepe of Cedar Rapids, IA, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ora, Feb. 26, 1977, son W.J., granddaughter Julie Riepe and sister Laura Frances Veith.
