Vernelda Catharine Slagel died, Sunday, September 2, 2007 at the Parkview Home in Wayland.
Celebration of her life will be 10:30, Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM Thursday at the Church with family receiving friends from 6-8:00. A memorial fund has been established for the Sugar Creek Home Missions and Parkview Home.
Vernelda was born August 15, 1923 in rural Wayland, the only daughter of Dan G. and Viola (Wyse) Widmer. She graduated from Wayland High School. She was united in marriage to Warren Slagel on November 10, 1946 in St. John’s, Michigan. She worked as a clerk at the Wayland SuperValue for many years.
Vernelda was a lifelong member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, church secretary and on the church council. She was very involved with Wayland Community Action and volunteered at the Crowded Closet in Iowa City.
Vernelda enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and helping others.
Survivors include her husband Warren of Wayland, three children and spouses, all of Wayland, Eric Slagel, Wendy and husband Ronald Scarff, Kelly and wife Veronica Slagel, five grandchildren, Ryan Scarff, Chad and wife Meg Scarff, Matthew and wife Jen Slagel, Sara Scarff and Andrea Slagel, four great grandchildren, Mekenzie Bean-Scarff, Quinn Scarff, Sydney and Warren Scarff, three brothers and wives; Dale and Geraldine Widmer of Mt. Pleasant, Wesley and wife Liz Widmer of Washington, Stanley and wife Martha Widmer of Wayland.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for the many acts of love and support shown to them during Vernelda’s illness and since her death. Your prayers and kindness will be remembered always.
