A Celebration of Life for Verla M. Lewis, 88, of Kalona will be held Monday, July 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Prairie Flower Baptist Church in rural Washington. A graveside service will be held Monday at 4:00 PM at the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City, IA. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 2 – 6 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Prairie Flower Baptist Church and various mission groups that Verla supported. Verla Lewis died Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at her home in Kalona.
Verla Mae (Stocks) Lewis was born March 6, 1929 in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Gordon and Mary Lucille (Thibodeau) Stocks. She was united in marriage to Richard A. Lewis on August 4, 1946 in Colwell, Iowa and they farmed in that area for 30 years. The couple then moved to Parkersburg, Iowa where Richard owned and operated a welding shop and Verla was active in the Christian Children's Ministry and taught Sunday school. Verla worked as a Nurses Aide at Osage Hospital and was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of the Prairie Flower Baptist Church and enjoyed being outside in her garden and mowing, making bandages and other craft items for mission groups and she was an excellent cook.
Survivors include two sons: James (Norma) Lewis of Fairmont, MN., Gerald (Lorraine) Lewis of Charles City, IA., three daughters: Aline (Kenneth) Schipper of Kalona, Carol Irving of Dundas, VA., Rita (Robert) Gardner of Tusla, OK., 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one on the way, one great great grandchild and her brother-in-law Roy Lewis of West Branch, IA.
Preceding Verla in death were her parents, her husband Richard in 2004, and a son-in-law Bob Irving.
