Vera Hartley, 104 of New London, formally of the Salem community, died Monday, December 30, 2002 at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center following declining health.
Funeral Services have been set for 1:30 P.M. Thursday, January 2, 2003 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Harold Dorsey officiating. Burial will be in the Salem South Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the Funeral Home with family receiving friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be designated to the New London Nursing and Rehab Center in the name of Vera Hartley.
Vera was born April 12, 1898 in Salem, IA the daughter of Lindley Murray and Mary Bell (Knight) Hartley and raised on the Pine Ridge Family farm south of Salem. She attended Chestnut Hill rural school, Salem High School and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1916. She continued her education at Iowa Wesleyan College, University of Iowa, Iowa State College and Brown Business College in Iowa City.
She was employed in various occupations throughout her life including librarian, United Airlines, University Hospital, nurses’ aid, and practical nurse in various cities across the West. She lived in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, Oklahoma, and California as well as Iowa.
In 1971 she moved to Salem where she resided until 1998 when she moved to the new London Care Center.
Survivors include: one nephew, Norval Mosher; three nieces, Joan Berkland, Averil Merritt and Norma Stecker; nine great nieces and nephews and thirteen great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
