Steven D. Freel,52,was born December 8, 1955,in Washington, Iowa the son of Wesley and Sharleen Miller Freel. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1974. He graduated from Muscatine Community College in 1976. Steve and Chris Svoboda were married in Wellman on September 8, 1979. Steve was part owner of Black Hawk Soil Service, Inc. for 30 years and also was owner of Freel Lawn Care for the past 15 years. He was an active member of the Kalona United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with hsi family and friends, hunting, shooting sporting clays, riding motorcycles and he was active in Pheasants Forever. Steve was a loving, caring person and everyone loved his easy going nature and his big hugs. Steve is survived by his wife, Chris of Kalona, three children; Shanna Freel of North Liberty, Jared and wife Lindsay of North Liberty and Matthew Freel and special friend Julia Raupp both of Iowa City. Also surviving are his mother, Sharleen Freel, sister and husband, Deb and Bob Yoder of Kalona, brother Mike and wife Jan Freel of Washington, father and mother-in-law Tony and Loretta Svoboda of Luzerne, IA, and brother-in-law, DeWayne and wife Holly Svoboda all of Cedar Rapids, IA. His father; Wesley Freel, sister Kathy Miller, sister-in-law Michelle Wagner and a niece, Allison Yoder, preceded Steve in death. A memorial fund in Steve's honor has been established for the Kalona United Methodist Church, Pheasants Forever, Aiming for a Cure or Ronald McDonald House. Steve's family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful family and friends who have been supportive through this most difficult time. Your love, prayers and many offerings of sympathy will always be remembered with love.
