Celebration of life services for Samuel Kemp, 84, of Kalona will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with Pastors Perry Miller, Don Swartzentruber and Leon Stutzman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, May 6 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Fairview Church. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home and Iowa City Hospice.
Samuel died Wednesday, May 4 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a lengthy illness.
Samuel Howard Kemp was born October 11, 1926 in rural Johnson County the son of Benedict and Sarah (Overholt) Kemp. He attended East Lincoln rural school. On November 20, 1947 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Miller. Samuel had a variety of occupations including carpentry, farming and was a roofer for 35 years. He was a member of the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church and enjoyed family time, gardening, fishing and reading. Samuel enjoyed playing the harmonica for anyone who would listen. Samuel was involved in CPS and prison ministries.

Survivors include nine children, Paul (Cheryl) Kemp of Riverside, IA, Anne Kennell of Goodfield, IL, Judy (Art) Suman of Marion, IA, Daniel (Edie) Kemp of Kalona, Dave (Bernadeth) Kemp of Kingman, AZ, Steve (Estella) Kemp of Golden Valley, AZ, Becky (Glenn) Grishkowsky of Phoenix, AZ, John (Anna) Kemp of Jay, FL, Mary (Ben) Highstrom of Savanna, IL, 23 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, three brothers, Elmer, Alvin(Rachel) and Noah(Linda) and three sisters, Alta Miller, Edna (Milford) Yoder and Mary(Doyle) Yoder, and a sister-in-law, Betty Kemp.

Preceding Samuel in death were his parents, his wife Elizabeth, stepmother, Katie, two sisters, Fanny and Carolina, and three brothers, Henry, Maynard and Omer.
