Samuel Hochstetler

A celebration of life for Samuel Hochstetler, 78, of Washington, formerly of Wellman, will be held Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 am at the East Union Mennonite Church with Pastor Joel Beachy officiating.  Visitation will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 4 – 7 pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  The body will be cremated following visitation and a private family burial will be held at East Union Cemetery.  A memorial fund has been established for East Union Mennonite Church.  Samuel Hochstetler died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Halcyon House in Washington following a sudden illness.

Samuel Wayne Hochstetler was born November 29, 1937 in rural Wellman, Iowa, the son of Aaron and Mary (Schrock) Hochstetler.  He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School and served his 1W Service in Ft. Wayne, IN.  Sam was married to Donna Butler and the couple had two children, Greg and Jeannine.  He was a certified electrician and worked in that capacity at the University of Iowa for more than 30 years.  Sam was a lifelong member of East Union Mennonite Church where he served as an usher and was a faithful member of the Berean Sunday School class.  He was a member of a BMW Motorcyle Club and the Optimist Club of Washington Township.  He enjoyed talking with family and friends, riding his motorcylce, bicycling, traveling, fishing in Canada, being outdoors and watching Hawkeye football and basketball.

Survivors include two children: Greg (Holly) Hochstetler of Washington, IA., Jeannine (Tony) Leonard of  Lander, WY., four grandchildren: Aaron and Nathan Leonard, Alannah and Abigail Hochstetler, one brother Frank Hochstetler of Kalona and one sister Edna (Gene) Miller of Kalona.

Preceding Sam in death were his parents, two sisters: Ruby Cutshall and Gladys Smith, an infant brother and sister-in-law Mary Hochstetler.
