A celebration of life and Masonic service for Samuel D. (Sam) Shepherd, 61 of Washington, will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Steve Koch officiating. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. A memorial fund has been established for the Masonic Lodge of Washington and Hospice of Washington County. Sam Shepherd died Monday, February 21, 2011 at his daughter’s home following a short illness.
Samuel D. Shepherd was born April 16, 1949 in Washington, IA the son of Max Hyde and Marie Jane (Cocayne) Shepherd. He graduated from Washington High School in 1967. On September 10, 1971 he was united in marriage to Rhonda Kindred. The couple later divorced. Sam was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 and served in Germany during the Vietnam War. He also served in the Gulf War and Desert Storm. He worked as a plant supervisor at Wilson Concrete for over 20 years, and was most recently employed at Ideal Concrete. Sam was a member of Masonic Lodge #26 and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, working on cars and NASCAR.
Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer and husband John Shive of Washington, three grandchildren, Kennedy, Addisen and Grant Shive, one sister, Sara and husband Jim Bohne of Washington, and one brother, Edward and wife Gwenyth Shepherd of Washington and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Sam in death were his parents and one brother, Bill Shepherd.
