He was raised in the community and graduated from Wellman High School. He entered the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific campaigns during WWII. Gus and Helen Polton were married in Kinross on December 14, 1946. Gus was a farmer and enjoyed life to the fullest. He had many interest; woodworking, feeding birds and wildlife, fishing and hunting were a few. Visiting with his many friends was his life style. His family was the most important part of his life. Gus was a member of the Williamsburg VFW, National Farmers Organization, Wellman American Legion and the Jolly Men's Club. His survivors are his children: Mike and Lydia, Jim and Brenda, Chuck and Deb, Connie and Jim, Shirley and Tony, Marcia and Don, Julie and Jerry, Mary, and Patty; 19 grandchildren listed as casket bearers and honorary casket bearers, and twelve great grandchildren. His wife, Helen on May 11, 1999, and infant son, three brothers, Bill, Emerson and Charlie and one sister Lula Brenneman preceded Gus in death. A memorial fund for the Friends of Old St. Michael's Church, the Wellman American Legion or Williamsburg VFW has been established. Gus' family wishes to thank everyone who was a part of his life and added to his enjoyment as he added to all who knew him. Your support at this time means so much to each of them and you will long be remembered.
