Roger Wyse was born on May 16, 1921, in rural Wayland, Iowa, to Arthur and Lillian (Weaver) Wyse. He became a member of Wayland Mennonite Church at the age of 13. He taught at rural Stringtown School for three years after graduating from Wayland High. On August 7, 1949, Roger was united in marriage to Rachel Graber in Wayland, Iowa, and farmed with his father for a number of years. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1963. Roger taught at Wellman Elementary School for four years while living in the area. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1965 with a Master's Degree in Education. The family moved to Bloomfield, Iowa, where he was an elementary school principal for 20 years. After retiring, he and Rachel moved back to Wayland, Iowa, their home base between volunteer assignments for ten years in a number of states. He enjoyed reading, writing, corresponding with friends and family, Rachel’s homecooking, gardening, music, nature, and his grandchildren.
Roger died on December 16, 2009, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa, at the age of 88 years. Roger is survived by his wife, Rachel, five children—Priscilla Clemens and husband Thomas of Baltimore, MD; Joseph Wyse of Kalona; daughter-in-law Glenda Yoder of Jamaica Plain, MA; Jeffrey Wyse and wife Sheila O'Neill of Chicago, IL; Jerome Wyse and wife Lori of Glendale, AZ; Ramona Wyse-Miller and husband James of Wellman, IA.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Farrier of Brighton. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Lisa Rae.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Wayland Mennonite Church, with Pam Gerig Unruh and Kelly Slagel officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Mennonite Central Committee. Roger's body has been deeded to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. His family will be in charge of the memorial service arrangements.
