A Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Shalla, 86 of Wellman, formerly of Kalona and Richmond, will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Father David Brownfield officiating. Burial will follow at the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in rural Richmond. Visitation will be held Friday November 16 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM with a rosary at 7:30 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Silver Pond and Parkview Home, Richard and Virginia's last loving home.  Richard Shalla died Tuesday, November 13 at Silver Pond in Wellman following a sudden illness.

Richard Shalla was born September 24, 1926 in Richmond, Iowa the son of Clem and Elsie (Lasek) Shalla.  He graduated from Kalona High School and served in the United States Army in Japan following World War II.  On May 1, 1948 he was united in marriage to Virginia Donaldson.  The couple lived and farmed in the Richmond area until moving to Kalona in 2004.  In September of 2011 he moved into the Silver Pond apartments in Wellman.

Richard was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond and he enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, playing cards, playing softball, eating Kolaches and homegrown popcorn, gardening and listening to the Sunday Morning Czech Party.

Survivors include five children and spouses, Sandra (Jim) Dougherty of O'Fallon, Missouri, Sally (Jack) Drumgould of Chicago, Illinois, Peggy (Paul) Basinger of Washington, Iowa, Dennis (Elaine) Shalla of Wellman, Iowa, Cindy (Jay) Thrapp of Wellman, Iowa, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding Richard in death were his parents, his wife Virginia on September 12, 2012, one brother, Clifford Shalla and one sister, Ramona Shalla.
