The farm he grew up on was destroyed by fire in 1939 and the family relocated to Worthegau, Germany. In 1940 he became a German citizen. He was forced to join the German Army in 1942 and was seriously injured in February of 1945. He was hospitalized for 8 months. He was taken prisoner by the Russians. In September of 1945 he was released, and set forth to locate his Mother and found her and they were moved to Bachnou immigration camp. June 6, 1949 he was baptized and later that year left Germany for Canada. September 9, 1950 he and Maria Willer were married in Black Creek, British Columbia. The family moved to Kalona in November of 1951. Richard was employed at the University of Iowa for 16 years and later at Hometown Dairy where he retired after 14 years of service. Richard was a charter member of the Kalona Mennonite Church. Two sisters-in-law, Anna Dumke and Elizabeth Zinn both of Kalona and a brother-in-law, Joe and wife Barbara Willer of Portsmith, New Hampshire, survive Richard. Also surviving are three nieces: Elsa Trotto of Rochester, NY, Judy Nagel of Kalona, Susan Willer of Portsmith, NH and a nephew Mark Willer of Portsmith, NH. Each of you who befriended Richard during his time at Pleasantview are special and the family appreciates your love, prayers and sympathy.
