Glenn Resor Parrott, 95 of Washington, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a short illness.


Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday March 21, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Danville, IA. at 2:30 pm. Visitation will begin at Noon Thursday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 PM Thursday evening. Memorials in the name of Glenn Resor Parrott have been established to the United Methodist Church Youth program or the Burlington First United Methodist Church Building Fund.


Glenn was born October 21, 1912 in Danville, Iowa the son of Eugene and Stella (Resor) Parrott. He attended Danville High School and later graduated from Rhodes High School west of Marshalltown, IA. After attending John Fletcher College at Oskaloosa, he taught rural school for three years, then finished at Wheaton College, IL, and took seminary training at Garrett Biblical Institute at Evanston, IL.


He began his career in the Methodist Ministry in Michigan, where he met and married Jane Carlson of Chicago. At one time they cared for two foster children for three years. Jane died in 1995 and in 1998 he was united in marriage to Mary Carlson, Jane's sister-in-law, at Hugoton, KS.


After serving eight years in Michigan, Glenn pastored Methodist Churches in Iowa at North English, Winterset, Council Bluffs, West Des Moines and Tipton and was the Ottumwa District Superintendent for six years, at which time he received an honorary doctorate degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. During those years he counseled and directed several church youth camps and served on the United Methodist Conference board of evangelism and board of ministry. He was elected delegate to General Conferences at Dallas and at St. Louis, and Jurisdictional Conferences at Peoria, Indianapolis and Detroit.


Upon retirement he served for five years as Chaplain of the Burlington Medical Center and the chapel at the new Great River medical Center was name in his honor. At various times he served as interim pastor of seven different Burlington Churches and on boards of the American Red Cross and Visiting Nurses Association. He was song leader for retired Keenagers YMCA men's group. He also took several courses at the Burlington Art Center and a course at Southeastern Community College.


Moving to the United Presbyterian Retirement Home in Washington in 1995, Glenn continued a personal pastoral ministry by sharing and encouraging others through devotional talks, Bible teaching, visits letters, phone calls, emails, and the writing of complementary poems. He also joined an art course and drew numerous sketches and colored pictures.


He is survived by his wife Mary of Washington, daughter Andree Halden and Barry of Burlington, IA; son Robert Parrott and Mary Jo of Houston, TX; daughter-in-law Beverly of Denver, CO; step daughters Marilyn Crane and Robert of Hugoton, KS and Janet Stickler and Bruce of Turpin, OK; step son Daniel Carlson and Sylvia of Farmington, NM; five grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five step great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jane and son Allen.
