Phyllis S. (Dovel) Glatch, 93, died Friday, September 4, 2020, at her home in Washington. Per Phyllis’ request her body will be cremated, and no services will be held. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County, and donations can be sent to Hospice of Washington County: 948 E 11th St, Washington, IA 52353. The Beatty Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Phyllis Suzanne (Dovel) Glatch was born September 2, 1927, in Pawnee, NE, the daughter of Isaac Earl and Edna Ruth (Conkle) Dovel. She graduated from Pawnee City High School and attended a teacher’s program and taught in rural schools. On October 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Don Glatch in Socorro, NM. Phyllis was a very creative woman and owned and operated several businesses throughout her life, including: “Something Else” in Racine, WI, the “Blue Note” and “Etc” in Washington, and an antique store in Olds. She made beautifully hand-crafted porcelain dolls and was known as the “Doll Lady” at the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant. In addition to porcelain dolls she was recognized in the Des Moines Register for her dolls made from Iowa clay. She loved creating in ceramic and in her later years began quilting, and she especially loved to create Log Cabin patterned quilts.
Survivors include five children: April Glatch of Milwaukee, WI, Melissa (Jeffory) Hobbs of Phoenix, AZ, Jenny Glatch of Baraboo, WI, Willard (Lindy) Glatch of Brighton, IA, Dan (Michelle) Glatch of Washington, IA, four grandchildren; Carrie, Sarah, Elizabeth and Clara, and six great-grandchildren; Ethan, Olivia, Cole, Luna, Joaquin and Vida.
Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, her husband Don, a sister Ruth Dovel and three brothers: Ellis, Brian and Lloyd Dovel.
