Paul L. “Nubbin” Miller, 91, of Kalona, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the University of Iowa Downtown Campus. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at East Union Mennonite Church with Pastor Joel Beachy officiating. The service will be available via Livestream at the Beatty Peterseim YouTube, and Facebook pages. Burial will take place prior to the service at 9:30 AM at the East Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4 – 7 PM on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the East Union Mennonite Church and the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Paul Lawrence Miller was born August 4, 1933, in rural Kalona, Iowa, the son of Henry H. and Mary Pearl (Gingerich) Miller. He attended Prairie Dale Rural School and graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1952. For his 1W service he worked in the kitchen at the Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. After his service he worked in food service at Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas, and later at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City. Paul owned and operated the Wayside Inn restaurant from 1966 to 1974. On May 18, 1968, he was united in marriage to Laura Kempf. After selling the business Paul worked as a meat cutter at Gay’s Meat Locker in Iowa City, the Kalona Locker, and Bud’s Custom Meats in Riverside. Paul was a lifelong member of East Union Mennonite Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years. He enjoyed having coffee at CBI and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Laura of Kalona, three children: Tom “Goose” (Rebecca) Miller of Kalona, Tim “Big” (Dee) Miller of Kalona, Ann Miller of Wood Dale, IL, four grandchildren: Mya, Noah, Ava and Jack Miller, two sisters-in-law: Nita Miller and Dolores Miller of Kalona, brother-in-law Marlin (Linda) Kempf of Iowa City, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Paul in death were his parents and three brothers: Daniel, Monroe and Quinten Miller.
