Pastor Donald A. Johanson, 71 of Wayland, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a short illness.
Funeral Services have been set for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at the Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Bob Wolf officiating and Pastors Don Green and Joe Forest assisting. Burial will be in the Fern Cliff Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Friday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with the family receiving friends from 6-8:00 in the evening. A general memorial in the name of Don Johanson has been established.
Don was born July 29, 1934 in Chicago, IL the son of Fritz Leonard and Esther Marie (Lindgren) Johanson. He graduated from Dundee High School in Dundee, IL, Greenville College in Greenville, IL in 1957 and seminary at Trinity Evangelical Divinity College in Chicago. He was united in marriage to Ella Brown June 17, 1961 in Leoti, KS.
Don was born again September 11, 1947 and was a pastor for 39 years. He was pastor at Rose Hill Ev. Free Church in Langford, SD, Monroe Ev. Free Church in Phillips, NE, Grace Ev. Free Church in Elbow Lake MN, Indianola Heights Ev. Free Church in Des Moines, Fern Cliff Ev. Free Church in Wayland and was employed at the Parkview Home in Wayland as Maintenance and the Chaplain. He was also available for pulpit supply. He greatly loved his family, people, flower gardening, games and cars.
Survivors include his wife Ella of Wayland, children, Dawn (Keith) Nilsen of Deerfield, IL, Nancy (Don) Green of Acton, CA, Doug (Holly) Johanson of Martensdale, IA, Bruce (Beth) Johanson of Escondido, CA and Peggy (Kevin) Tutt of Columbia, MO; brother Leonard (Marilyn) Johanson of Algonquin, IL; seventeen grandchildren, Ben, Andrew, J.T. and Jeremy Nilsen, Hannah, Gretchen, Daniel, Julie, Addie and Marisa Green, Emma and Esa Johanson, Jessica and Rachel Johanson, Sara, Levi and Ella Tutt.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
Music was provided by Cathy Wolf on piano, Melanie Draper on organ and soloist was Jeff McGee. Pallbearers were Marvin Stauffer, Barry Leichty, Don Lowe, Dennis Draper, Dale Cox and Dr. Bob Pusey.
