Pastor Richard Lee Boyd, 53, of Washington died Saturday December 8, 2007 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of Life services will be held 10:30 am Wednesday December 12, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Washington with Pastor Boyd’s pastoral friends officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 and from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday at the First Christian Church. Interment will take place at the Harris Cemetery in rural Dallas City, Illinois at 4:00 pm on Wednesday. A memorial has been established for his children’s education.
Rich was born on January 31, 1954 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to George Donald and Sherill (Harter) Boyd. He graduated from North Mahaska High School in New Sharon in 1972 and from Central College in Pella in 1976. Rich received his Masters of Divinity from North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1980. Rich was united in marriage to Janet Massie on December 27, 1976 in Colusa, Illinois. He was the pastor at the Christian Church in Rock Rapids from 1977 to 1981 when he moved to serve at Lomax/Dallas City, Illinois Pastoral Unity from 1981 to 1990. Rich served as the pastor at the First Christian Church in Washington from 1990 until 2007. Rich was involved in his communities as an EMT, with the Jaycees and Morning Optimist Club, where he served as past president, Little League coach, and as a Hospice Chaplain and volunteer. Pastor Rich touched many hearts with his ministry in word and song. He was a proud father and husband and sought to honor the Lord in his life.
Rich is survived by his wife, Janet Boyd of Washington; son, Jacob and wife Lauren Boyd of Marion; daughter, Erica Boyd of Washington; son, Caleb Boyd of Washington; parents, Don & Sherill Boyd of New Sharon; sister, Lori and husband Roger Soppe of Cedar Rapids; sister, Jill and husband Kerry Lake of Union Mills; sister, Jan and husband Phil DeBoef of Lacey; brother, Steve and wife Deb Boyd of Cedar Rapids; sister, Mary and husband Lanny Brand of Altoona; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Virginia Massie of Carthage, Illinois; sister-in-law, Gayle and husband Bill Radel of Nauvoo, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Herriman and special friend Gary Doss of Dallas City, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
