A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Opal Mercer, 95 of Washington, formerly of Springville and Kalona, will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Halcyon House in Washington with Father Bernie Weir officiating. Burial will be held prior to the memorial mass at 10 AM Friday, at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 5 – 7 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home, Halcyon House, Kalona Public Library and Hospice of Washington County. Opal Mercer died Friday, August 29, 2014 at Halcyon House in Washington.
Opal Kathleen (Miner) Mercer was born June 17, 1919 in Anamosa, Iowa the daughter of Algie and Marjorie (Livingston) Miner. She was united in marriage to Robert Mercer on July 1, 1947 in Clarence, Missouri. She worked as a sales clerk for a variety of stores, including Killian's, Woolworth's and the grocery store in Springville. She also cooked at the High School in Springville. Opal was a member of St. Isadore's Catholic Church in Springville and most recently attended St. James Catholic Church in Washington. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading, singing, cooking, baking and country music. Opal especially cherished her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include two children: Roger (Tana) Mercer of El Dorado Hills, California, Phyllis (Mark) Casper of Kalona, five grandchildren: Adam, Lucas and Micah Casper, Paul (May) Mercer and Jennifer (Jesse) Gomez, seven great grandchildren: Brandon Mercer, Nicole Mercer, Gruffydd Casper, Brooke Gomez, and Samantha, Savannah and Ethan Gomez.
Preceding Opal in death were her parents, her husband Robert in 2011 and four brothers and two sisters.
