Norman Lee Unternahrer, 62 of Wayland, died Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 AM Thursday, March 8, 2007 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Wednesday at the church with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 in the evening. Beatty Funeral Home of Wayland is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial be given to the Mennonite Central Committee in the name of Norman Unternahrer.
Norman was born June 21, 1944 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa the son of Noah and Barbara (Wenger) Unternahrer. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1962 and later attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years before graduating from Iowa State University with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Political Science. In 1965 he began a term with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where he met Irene Hortensia Mendez Cabo, to whom he was later married on June 7, 1969 in Montero, Bolivia.
He was a faithful member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where he served in various capacities, including those of Sunday school teacher and elder. Norman was committed to serving others and peace and justice issues were very important to him. His involvements over the years included Iowa Peace Network, Crooked Creek Christian Camp, J-POG (Just Peace Outreach Group), Habitat for Humanity, Mennonite Disaster Service, Sugar Creek’s Peace and Social Concerns committee and in various capacities with MCC. He was employed with LJ Roth Reconstruction in Olds for twenty-six years.
Survivors include his wife Hortensia of Wayland; Parents, Noah and Barbara Unternahrer of Wayland; children Eric Unternahrer of Washington DC, Susanna Zook and husband Andre of Houston, TX and Jennifer Moreno and husband Marco of Northlake, IL; brothers David Unternahrer and wife Janis of Wayland, IA and Ronald Unternahrer and wife Ingrid of East Stroudsburg, PA; sisters Rosetta Koerner and husband David of Kalona, IA, Kathryn Smith and husband Charles of Nappanee, IN and Esther Amstutz and husband Chuck of Orrville, OH.
