Norman Dean Meyer, 87 of Wayland, Iowa died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Celebration of his life will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Pastor Darrell Zook officiating. Family graveside services will be at 9:30AM prior to the service Wednesday at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Tuesday at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 PM in the evening. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials have been established to the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Parkview Retirement Home or Crooked Creek Christian Camp.
Dean was born January 9, 1922 in Trenton, Iowa to Benjamin C. Meyer and Maude Mae (Wyse). Dean married his life partner, Doris Jean Eigsti on Thanksgiving Day November 22, 1945.
As a young man Dean volunteered for Civilian Public Service working in a mental hospital in New Jersey and dam projects in South Dakota. Following his voluntary service, he and Doris farmed near Wayland, Iowa. He later worked for many years as Elevator Manager and then Director of Transportation for Yoder Feeds.
He was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church where he worshipped and served his entire life.
Dean was active on many Wayland community and Henry County boards. He participated with many civic organizations that benefited from his leadership. In later years Dean enjoyed retirement, with winters in Florida and keeping up with family, friends and church activities.
His wife of 63 years, two sons, R.D. and wife Brenda of Laguna Nigel, CA, Robert and wife Karen of Wayland, one daughter, Kathy Schooley and husband Dave of Bloomfield, IA survive him.
Dean was blessed with six grandchildren, Richard and Rustin Meyer of San Diego, CA, Brian Meyer and wife Andrea of Riverside, IA, Angie Amunson and husband Erik of Swisher, IA Sarah Cabildo and husband Aldrich of Urbandale, IA and Ben Schooley and wife Tara of Chariton, IA.
Dean also had three great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Olivia Meyer of Riverside and Dominic Cabildo of Urbandale. He was anticipating two more in the near future.
His parents, older brothers Harold and Donald, older infant sister Katherine and younger infant sister Jane preceded Dean in death.
All who knew and love him will be miss Dean Meyer’s tremendous faith, humility, and business acumen.
