Funeral Services for Norma B. Sandurg, 85, of Washington will be held at
10:30 Monday, March 30, 2015 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Kelly Allard officiating. Burial will follow at the Swedesburg Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 4-7:00 Sunday afternoon at the Funeral Home in Washington. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County and the Washington Historical Society. Norma B. Sandburg, 85 of Washington, died Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the McCreedy Home in Washington.
Norma Barbara (Horak) Sandburg was born October 27, 1929 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Bessie (Swedensky) Horak. She graduated from Washington High School in 1948 and attained an Associates Degree from Washington Junior College. She taught at a rural school in Washington County for two years. Norma was united in marriage to J. Dean Sandburg on October 26, 1952 at Bethel Presbyterian Church. They lived on the family farm north of Ainsworth where they worked for 40 years raising cattle, hogs, crops and three kids. The farm was named a Century Farm in 2012, having been in the family for more than 100 years. She was a lifelong member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she served in many ways. Norma also worked as a cook and van driver for the Highland Community School district for 16 years and later worked in the dietary department at the Washington Care Center for nine years. She was a member of the Friendship Club, Cow Belles, Farm Bureau Women, Sacha Club and the Washington Historical Society. Norma enjoyed gardening, flowers and her grandkids.
Survivors include three children: Robert (Joni) Sandburg of Washington, Richard (Angie) Sandburg of Ainsworth, Kari (Doug) Green of Nichols, eight grandchildren: Jillian, Mitchell, Lane, Nicholas, Derick, Kalyn, Dylan, Dalton, great granddaughter, Halle, a life long friend, Betty Zwicki, and two cousins: Delores Grecian and Wayne Horak.
Preceding Norma in death were her parents, her husband J. Dean, a son, Charles and close friend, Mary Alice Ray.
