Noah Unternahrer, age 90, of the Parkview Home in Wayland, died Friday, August 29, 2008 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 10:00AM at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, rural Wayland. Burial will follow at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Monday, Sept. 1, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where the family will greet friends from 5-7PM. A memorial fund has been established in Noah’s name for Gideon’s International and Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.
Noah Unternahrer was born on February 5, 1918 in Wayland, Iowa the son of Christian and Anna (Rediger) Unternahrer. He attended Douglas Country School. On June 21, 1942 Noah was united in marriage to Barbara Elizabeth Wenger in Wayland. The couple lived and farmed in the Wayland area for over 50 years.
Noah was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where he had served as a trustee and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of Gideon’s International and was a board member at the Iowa Mennonite School. Noah enjoyed being a farmer, woodworking, reading, cracking and picking out nuts, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of Wayland, five children and spouses, Kathryn and Charles Smith of Nappanee, IN, Ronald and Ingrid Unternahrer of Stroudsburg, PA, David and Janis Unternahrer of Wayland, Rosetta and David Koerner of Kalona, Esther and Chuck Amstutz of Orrville, OH, one daughter-in-law, Hortensia Unternahrer of Wayland, 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Preceding Noah in death were his parents, one son, Norman Unternahrer on March 3, 2007, two great grandchildren, John Luke Walker on January 21, 2008 and Hazel Irene Smith on April 16, 2008, two brothers, Joe and Jake Unternahrer and one sister, Hannah Roth, and four sisters who died in infancy.
