Nancy Kay Macek

November 21, 1942 — December 4, 2024

Nancy Kay (Johnson) Macek, 82, passed away from this life on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. The service will be available on the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church YouTube page.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Mc1ncdHWk. Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM at the church. Private family burial will take place at Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove, Iowa on Sunday, December 8. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Nancy was born November 21, 1942, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert “Del” and Ruth Leora (Anderson) Johnson. She graduated Salutatorian from Jewell South Hamilton High School in Jewell, Iowa - where she was also the homecoming queen. Being an only child, she was close to all her extended cousins, who meant a lot to her. She continued a close friendship with her childhood friend, Nelda Nelson, all throughout her life.

She went to work for Iowa State University in Ames in the Married Student Housing department. While working there she met Keith Macek and after three months to the day, they were married on November 28, 1964 - in a blizzard - at the Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Nancy was an infant daycare provider for over 25 years, and was also a receptionist for Blue Moon, LLC. Nancy was a faithful member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, watching the services online after she was unable to attend in person.

To say Nancy was a sports fanatic is an understatement. She gained her love of all sports from her father, who taught her at a young age to shoot basketball hoops and to understand all the rules of football. She made it a point to attend or watch all sports events of her children and her grandchildren. If you needed to know when a game was on, Nancy could tell you. If you wanted to spare an hour on the phone, Nancy would call you. She was also an avid seamstress and reliable homemaker. Among her many memorable qualities, she was hardworking, steadfast and meticulously organized. Nancy was selfless, putting her family and friends before herself in all aspects of her life, and was the “glue that stuck everyone together.” She loved her sweets until the end. But that love probably started as a young girl when she ate ice cream for breakfast.

Survivors include her husband Keith of Iowa City; three daughters: Cindy (Rob) Miller of Wellman, IA, Julie (Larry) Miller of Independence, MO, Vicki (Todd) Smith of Hebron, KY; seven grandchildren: Peyton (Rebecca) Miller, Ainsley Miller, Zac (Haylie) Miller, Mitchell, Alex and Brandon Miller and Leora Smith, and two great-grandchildren: Jaxson and Mia Miller.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents.
