A celebration of life for Muriel I. Niffenegger, 97, of Kalona will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:30AM at the Kalona United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerry Kahler officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held Friday, October 31, 2014 from 4 – 8 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Kalona United Methodist Church and Hospice. Muriel died Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Muriel I. (Michel) Niffenegger was born August 24, 1917 in rural Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Alma (Ford) Michel. She graduated from Kalona High School and Iowa Teacher's School. Muriel taught at Middleburg School for three years and later worked at the University of Iowa until retirement. On March 18, 1939 she was united in marriage to Arlis Niffenegger in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was a member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Eagle's Lodge and Rebekah's. Muriel enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include six children: Michael (Joyce) Niffenegger of Kalona, Gerald (Eliete) Niffenegger of Florianopolis, Brazil, Ward (Kathy) Niffenegger of Kalona, Bill (Beverly) Niffenegger of Cloud Croft, NM, Dixie (Steve) Schlabaugh and Jane (John) Schlabaugh both of Kalona, 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Preceding Muriel in death were her parents, and her husband Arlis in 1981.
