Mildred was born Mildred Elizabeth Kauffman in Wayland, Iowa on December 17, 1905 and went to rest with parents, William M. Kauffman and Suzanne (Nafziger), brothers Ralph, Max, and Harold, sisters Edith, Leola, and Marie preceded her in death. She attended Maple Grove and Wayland High School completing her sophomore year. She discontinued her education to assist her family in the farming operation and household chores on the Montgomery Farm. She worked for Magdefrau Dry Good’s Store in the 20’s and McCleery Cumming in the 50’s and 60’s.
Mildred married Allen Roth Meyer, August 19, 1931 who preceded her in death in 1980. She served her family as wife and mother living on various farms around the Wayland area until moving to town in the late 50’s. A baby girl was stillborn in 1935. Sons James and Richard were born in 1937 and 1940. Allen and Mildred were blessed to have Gene, Marilyn, and Gary, children of Elmer and Ellen Meyer, live with them during part of their high school years, and she always considered them as part of the family.
Mildred was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church and of the Order of Easter Star. Her service to the church included Women in Missions and singing in various groups over the decades. Her forte was hospitality and she opened her home and prepared food for countless family members and friends over the years. It was her delight to wander through timber and farmland enjoying her Lord’s creation and finding peace with the Psalmist in ‘lifting her eyes unto the hills from where came her help’.
Mildred is survived by her sons and their wives, Jim and Norma and Rich and Jan; grandchildren, Todd, Annette, Julie, and Mark; and six grandchildren. The family is blessed by the fact that she lived over a century and they were able to share in her life for so many years.
