A celebration of life for Melvin R. Barthelman, 72, of Kalona will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 10:00 am the Full Gospel Revival Center in Kalona with Pastor Ron Breese officiating. Burial will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held Friday, September 2 from 4 – 8 pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Memorial funds will be used to establish scholarships at the Mid-Prairie and Sigourney School Districts. Melvin Barthelman died Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at his home in Kalona following a sudden illness.
Melvin Roy Barthelman was born December 5, 1943 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Roy E. and Nadine (Scharff) Barthelman. Mel was raised on a farm and graduated from North Mahaska High School in 1962. On January 25, 1963 he was united in marriage to Connie Grimm in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1965 the couple moved to Aurora, Illinois where Mel worked as a machinist for Caterpillar for 25 years. After moving to Kalona he owned and operated Barthelman Construction for 17 years. In his retirement he enjoyed going to car auctions and shuttling vehicles for Kalona Auto. Mel was member of the Full Gospel Revival Center and enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events. He was a die hard Hawkeyes fan and loved the Cubs, Bears and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Survivors include his wife Connie of Kalona, four children: Kim (Brenda) Barthelman of Kalona and children Colton and Mitchell; Kelli (Jeff) Pitz of Dubuque and children Jessica Pitz, Caleb (Brittany) Pitz, Tyler (Brian) Becwar Pitz, and Christi Pitz; Scott (Kimberly) Barthelman of Kalona and children Jared, Justin, Brody, Ciarra and Anna; Troy (Heather) Barthelman of Sigourney and children Autum, Summer and Rain; 10 great grandchildren: Jecca, Izak, Carson, Landon, Natalie, Mason, Emily, Gabriela, Aundrea and Kinsely, a brother Charles (Willie) Barthelman of Michigan, sister Pamela (Dick) Barthelman McGriff of Montezuma, IA.
Preceding Mel in death were his parents and his step father John Van Maanen.
