A celebration of life for Mary Elizabeth Slemmons, 96, of Washington, will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Kitch Schatzer officiating. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 PM Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Funeral Home. Following services her body will be cremated and private family burial will be in the West Liberty Cemetery. Memorials in the name of Mary Elizabeth Slemmons are designated to the Ainsworth Community Church or the United Presbyterian Home.

Mary Elizabeth (DeForest) Slemmons was born October 6, 1920 in Cedar County, Iowa, the daughter of Ruben and Stella A. (Webster) DeForest. She graduated from West Liberty High School in 1939 and from the Mercy Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1943. Mary Elizabeth was a registered nurse and worked at the University of Iowa Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Cedar Manor in Tipton and Clausens in Iowa City. On June 24, 1944 she was united in marriage to Floyd Slemmons. Mary Elizabeth was a member of the Ainsworth United Methodist Church
Survivors include four children: James Slemmons of Washington, IA., Janalyn Steffens of Coralville, IA., Forest Slemmons of Marshalltown, IA., and Roger (Karen) Slemmons of Tiffin, IA., eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Preceding Mary in death was her husband Floyd in 1989, son Floyd John Slemmons, Jr and brother Gail DeForest.
