A celebration of life for Marlo M. Matthes, 95 of rural North English will be held Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona with Chaplain Carroll Yoder officiating. The body has been cremated and burial will be held at a later date.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 27, from 3-7PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  Marlo Matthes died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at his home in rural North English.

Marlo Melvin Matthes was born May 30, 1917 in rural Wellman, Iowa the son of Marvin B. and Ida A. (Dawson) Matthes.  He graduated from Wellman High School and joined the United States Army, serving in World War II, where he earned the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Medal.  On July 12, 1947 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Graper.  Marlo farmed in Iowa County, operated heavy earth moving equipment and drove livestock trucks.  He also raised mules and horses which he enjoyed driving through local parades for many years.

He was a member of the Jolly Men's Club in Wellman and the Wellman Lions Club.  Marlo enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, raising mules, going to Tama and Riverside, spending time at the North English Malt Shop and the North English Historical Society.  He played Santa Claus for many years.  Marlo lived every day to the fullest and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of North English, one son, Michael (Denise) Matthes of North English, two daughters, Maxine (Daryl) Hervey of Wellman, Mary Lou (Bud) Phillips of Kinross, six grandchildren, Matthew (Jodi) Matthes, Michael Matthes, Heather (Jason) Trimpe, Brian Hervey, Seth Phillips, Lee Phillips, and four great grandchildren, Ethan, Owen and Cassie Trimpe, and Ellie Matthes.

Preceding Marlo in death were his parents and one sister, Myda Mary Matthes.
