A funeral service for Marguerite (Emde) Zook, 97, of Kalona will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:30 am at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona, with Pastor Joel Beachy officiating. Burial will follow at the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, February 24, 2017 from 4 – 6pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the East Union Mennonite Church, Pleasantview Home and Mennonite Central Committee. Marguerite Zook died Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Marguerite Louise (Emde) Zook was born March 11, 1919 in the family home at Horseshoe Bend in rural Wellman. She attended Horseshoe Bend rural school. On January 25, 1939 she was united in marriage to Vernon S. Zook at the bride's home by Bishop Dan Fisher. The couple moved to the farm on Highway 1, rural Iowa City, which became their home for the next 58 years. Marguerite worked as a cook at the University of Iowa Hospital School. She was a member of the East Union Mennonite Church where she was active in the women's sewing circle and the Love and Service Sunday School class, a class that afforded her many meaningful relationships over the years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and handwork – quilting and embroidery.
Survivors include two children and spouses: Donald (Verna) Zook of Iowa City, Linda (Paul) Paine of Alamosa, CO., six grandchildren: LeAnne, Jennifer, Kathleen, Kevin, Elizabeth and Frederick, five great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Joanne Emde of Iowa City and six nephews.
Preceding Marguerite in death was her husband Vernon in 2004, her daughter Janice Leodolter, son-in-law Manfred Leodolter, two brothers: Vernon and John Emde and two sisters: Helen Emde and Rose Brenneman.
