Memorial services for Lloyd Bender 85, of Kalona will be held Friday, August 27, 2010 at 11:00AM at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona with Pastor Mick Murray and Chaplain David L. Yoder officiating. Private family burial will be held prior to the service. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 26 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona First Responders, Kalona Volunteer Fire Department and Iowa City Hospice. Lloyd died Wednesday morning, August 25, 2010 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a lengthy illness. Lloyd was born November 7, 1924 in Kalona the son of Ira and Lena (Miller) Bender. He attended various rural schools, including Pleasant Hill, Center and Middleburg. He was united in marriage to Barbara Stutzman at Fairview Church on December 24, 1944. Lloyd was a farmer and later worked at Gingerich Implement, Kalona Battery Factory and the Kalona Bakery, where he drove the delivery van for 15 years. He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church and later transferred membership to the Kalona Mennonite Church. Lloyd enjoyed pitching fastball, watching his grandkids in their sports activities and was a NASCAR fan, where his favorite driver was Richard Petty. Survivors include his wife Barbara of Kalona, four children and spouses, Derald (Marilyn) Bender of Kalona, Dwight (Jenelle) Bender of Kalona, Delwyn "Bud" Bender of Kalona, Darlene (Ron) Gingerich of Riverside, one foster son, Mike (Emily) Ferguson of Kalona, seven grandchildren, Mike (Brenda) Bender, Vicki Bender, Kelby (Leanne) Bender, Tiffani (Richie) Davis, Torrey (Jody) Gingerich, Tyrell Gingerich, Tristan (Jacque) Gingerich, three foster granddaughters, Kelli (Justin) Schrock, Jodi and Mollie Ferguson, eight great grandchildren, Cassidy and Abe Bender, Madelyn and Morgyn Bender, Lillian and Drew Davis, Grady and Landry Gingerich, one sister, Ruby (Owen) Miller of Oxford, IA, and one brother in law, Paul Shetler of Greenwood, DE. Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents, two brothers, Ivan and Monroe Bender, and two sisters, Dorothy Shetler and Mary Bender.
