A celebration of life for Laverne H. Hueholt, 75 of Wayland, will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 1:00PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Northeast District Superintendent Jackie Bradford officiating. Burial with military honors follow at the Green Mound Cemetery in rural Trenton. Visitation will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 from noon until 7PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington where the family will greet friends from 5-7PM. A memorial fund has been established for the Wayland Methodist Church, Spring Grove Methodist Church, The American Cancer Society and Prison Ministries. Laverne Hueholt died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the Henry County Hospital in Mt. Pleasant following a battle with lung cancer.
Laverne Herbert Hueholt was born July 29, 1936, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Charles Herbert and Mabel (Peterson) Hueholt. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1954, attended UNI, obtained a Bachelors Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College and his Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. Laverne served in the United States Active Naval Reserve from 1955 to 1963. He was united in marriage to Sondra Farrington in 1957, the couple later divorced. On April 5, 1997 he was united in marriage to Judith A. Bates Messer at the Wayland Methodist Church. Laverne was a teacher and coach and served for 39 years in school administration, retiring from the WACO School District in 1995. He was a Certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church and had been serving the Spring Grove Methodist Church of Burlington since September of 2006. He served as a consultant for the Iowa Department of Education for five years. Laverne was a member of the Wayland Methodist Church, served on numerous local, district and state church committees, was a member of the Wayland Lions Club where he was a past president, secretary and treasurer. He had a passion for prison ministry and led a Bible study every Wednesday evening at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility. Laverne also served on the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Boards and volunteered with AARP in tax preparation. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Football fan, loved John Wayne movies and traveling, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Judith of Wayland, seven children, Diane (Curt) Kretzinger of St. Joseph, MO, Teresa (Rod) Dowd of Perry, IA, Debby (Al) Hauk of Indianola, IA, Cheryl Hueholt and fiance' Randy Glasgow of Winfield, IA, Lori (Sam) Yancey of Wentzville, MO, Tim (Chris) Messer of Cedar Rapids, IA, daughter in law, Jeri Messer of Cedar Rapids, IA, 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, two brothers, Glen (Lois) Hueholt of White Haven, PA, Harold Hueholt of San Antonio, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Laverne in death were his parents, a grandson, Sean Correy and a son, Scott Messer.
