Kenneth Duane Miller, 79 of Wayland, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Henry County Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral Services have been set for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at the Wayland Mennonite Church with Pastor Gerry Klopfenstein and Pam Unruh officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the North Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Monday at the Church with family present from 6-8:00 in the evening. Memorials may be designated to the Wayland Mennonite Church, Wayland Fire Department or the Wayland Rescue Squad.
Kenneth was born December 20, 1926 in Steuart, Iowa the son of Ira Nicholas and Mildred Lucille (Ripley) Miller. He graduated from Olds High School and served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII in Okinawa. He was united in marriage to Elaine Verlee Roth on January 4, 1948 at the Wayland Mennonite Church.
Kenneth was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church, Lions Club, American Legion, Wayland Area Tractor Club, Wayland 4th of July Committee, Festival of Lights Christmas Committee, served as city councilman from 1972-1978, was mayor of Wayland from 1978-1986, volunteered as a fireman, serving as Captain, Assistant Chief and Fire Chief. He managed and then owned and operated the Hardware Store in Wayland for twenty-two years. He was also a member of the Wayland Housing Corporation Board and served as president, was Trustee for the Wayland Mennonite Church, board member of the Parkview Home and past president of the Wayland Museum Board.
He enjoyed antique tractors, toy tractors and his Maytag appliance memorabilia collection.
Survivors include his mother Mildred of Wayland, wife Elaine of Wayland; children, Malcolm Miller and wife Nancy of Ames, IA, Meredith Miller of Independence, IA, LuJean Bennett and husband Michael of Knoxville, IA, Kim Sheets and husband Dan of Wayland, Kelly Smith and husband Greg of State Center, IA and Tina Garrett and husband Curt of Mt. Pleasant; brother Richard Craig Miller and wife Gail of Fairfield, IA; sister Beverly Royer of Winfield, IA and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
