Celebration of life services for 88 year old Joseph Lee West, Jr. will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at 10AM at the 1st Assembly of God Church in Washington with Pastor Jim Cluney officiating. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, with full military honors by American Legion Post #29 of Washington. Visitation will be held from noon – 7PM on Monday, January 11 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington where the family will greet friends from 5-7PM. A memorial fund has been established for the 1st Assembly of God Church or Hospice of Washington County. Joe West died Thursday, January 7 at the Washington County Hospital following a lingering illness.

Joseph West was born May 9, 1921 in Paris, MO, the son of Joseph Lee and Myra (Miller) West. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII from 1942 – 1946.
Joe was united in marriage to Irene Westen on Apirl 8, 1943 in the Christian Tabernacle Church in Washington, IA. He delivered milk for the Griffith and Hedberg Dairy for 15 years and worked as a custodian at the Washington County Courthouse for 24 years. Joe was a member of the 1st Assembly of God Church and enjoyed playing board games, gardening, reading and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Irene of Washington, IA, one daughter, Kathy Hawkins of Washington, IA, one daughter-in-law, Deborah (Rodney) Wittkamp of Burlington, IA, five grandchildren, Sam (Shelly) West of Burlington, IA, Melinda (Mike) Clark of Burlington, Dennis (Melanie) Hawkins of Washington, IA, David Hawkins and Andrea Hawkins of Washington, five great grandchildren, Olivia and Jack Clark, Samuel and Carter West, Landen Lee Hawkins, four step great grandchildren, Kirby and Cody Clark, Travis and Jon Graf, and one sister-in-law, Viola West of Washington, IA.

Preceding Joseph in death were his parents, one son, Samuel J. West on March 12, 1973, one son-in-law, Dennis L. Hawkins, Sr, on Dec. 18, 1988, two brothers, Charles and Hubert West, two sisters, Nona West and Ruth Carr, two half brothers, Cleo and Brace West and one half sister, Neva West.
