Joseph Gowey

July 9, 1925 — September 30, 2011

A Celebration of Life service for Joseph Edward Gowey will be held Wednesday, October 5 at 11 a.m. at Wayland Mennonite Church with Pastor Pam Unruh and Pastor Kelly Slagel officiating. A private burial will be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at North Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 4 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Wayland Mennonite Church. His body has been cremated. Joseph Edward Gowey died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Washington County Hospital. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.


Joe was the second of six children born July 9, 1925 to Maurice and Eunice (Engel) Gowey in Washington, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Miriam Lucille Wyse on October 12, 1957.
Following graduation from Brighton High School, Joe was employed by Dexter Company in Fairfield and later worked as a salesman for United Haggie Seed Corn Company. He eventually started his own business and operated Gowey Oil Company for 15 years. Never one to sit still, even in retirement, Joe spent 17 years caring for the city parks as a City of Wayland employee.
He served in the US Army during World War 2. Joe was devoted to his family and was an avid gardener. He was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Adoniram Lodge.


Joe is survived by his wife and sons, Gregory (Melinda) Gowey, Davenport, Iowa, and Jerald (Rhonda) Gowey, Urbandale, Iowa; six grandchildren Taylor, Alexander, Emma, Nicholas, Rachel and Madeline; sisters Virginia Brinton and Norma “Toots“ (Dennis) Conrad, and brother Ralph (Nancy) Gowey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lucy Warren and Betty Hoekstra, and grandson Joseph Engel Gowey.


Memorials may be made to North Hill Cemetery or Hospice of Washington County.
