Joseph Dean Freyenberger, 81 of Wayland, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 of Lymphoma at Parkview Home in Wayland. Funeral services will be at 10:30AM Friday, October 21, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland with Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Thursday, October 20, at the church. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Joseph Dean Freyenberger was born June 22, 1930 at Wayland, Iowa, the son of Christian J. and Leah Mast Freyenberger. He graduated in 1948 from Wayland High School in Wayland, IA. Following high school he attended Goshen College, Goshen IN where he met Janice Carolyn Roth. They were united in marriage at Central Mennonite Church in Archbold, OH on October 28, 1951. After serving in 1-W they returned to Wayland to farm. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1965 and worked for Farm Credit Services for 20 years before returning to farming. Joe was a faithful and active member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Crusaders Sunday school class where he enjoyed teaching Sunday school, serving on the church council and was an Elder for many years. He often volunteered with MDS and at the Crowded Closet. He was a member of the Gideon’s International. He also served on the Parkview Home and Wayland State Bank Boards. Joe and Janice enjoyed traveling, and volunteered their time with Water for Life in Haiti and with VOCA in Bolivia, Czechoslovakia, Kyrgystan, and Armenia.
Joe enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren at the family pond.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Freyenberger of Iowa City, Michelle (Douglas) Frederick of Kalona, Carmen Martinez of Berwyn, Il, Maria (Michael) Roth of Wayland, 8 grandchildren, Anthony, David and Kellie Frederick, Adriana and Joseph Martinez, Abigail, Christian and Jackson Roth, two great-grand children Isabelle and Liam Frederick, sister-in-law, Clela Helm of Trenton, NJ and brother-in-law, Herbert (Charlotte) Roth of Newville, PA.
Preceding Joseph was his wife Janice in August 2010, an infant daughter, his parents and his adopted brother Arthur Freyenberger.
A memorial fund has been established for Parkview Home or Gideon’s International.
