John Calvin McDowell, 83, West Chester, died Monday evening, November 11, 2002 at his home north of West Chester following declining health.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 15, 2002 the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Rick Dunn officiating. Burial will be in the West Chester Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9:00 A.M. Thursday with family receiving friends from 5:30 till 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers a general memorial has been established in the name of John Calvin McDowell.
Mr. McDowell was born June 7, 1919 in Dalton, OH the son Merl Hassler and Elda Edna (Sprunger) McDowell. He was united in marriage to Louise Kingsley on August 21, 1941 in Lakewood, OH, she preceded him in death in 1985. On September 6, 1988 he was united in marriage to Glenda Ladehoff at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
John graduated from Frenchburg High School in Frenchburg, KY and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Berea College. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of West Chester and had held several positions in the Federated Church in West Chester. He was also a member of the West Chester Lions club. He farmed for most of his life and beginning in 1963 became the business manager for the Mid-Prairie Schools retiring in 1984. John enjoyed horses, woodworking, gardening, reading and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife Glenda of West Chester; two sons, Ian John McDowell at home and Tim McDowell of Kalona; four daughters, Ann Thomas and husband Tim of Holstein, IA, Virginia Azboy and husband Sadi of Washington, Phyllis Popp and husband Tom of Batavia, IL and Barbara Whitt and husband Bill of Kansas City, MO; five sisters, Edna Estep of Fort Worth, TX, Marion Cuddeback of Washington, Elda Ruth Lorah of East Liverpool, OH, Esther Marie “Pat” Varner and husband Delbert of Towanda, KS and Margaret “Peggy” Parcell and husband Keith of Lockridge, IA; seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Louise, two brothers, David and Merl and sister Jane.
