John L. Johnson, 73 of Washington, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City following declining health.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington the Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. Burial will be in the West Chester Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Funeral Home with family present from 6-8:00 P.M. A memorial in the name of John L. Johnson has been established.
John was born February 8, 1929 in Richland, Iowa the son of Earnest Ishmael and Sarah (Cavin) Johnson. On June 20, 1953 he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Buck at the First Baptist Church in Washington, IA.
He served in the Army during the Korean War from 1950 thru 1952. He was employed as a farmhand and was mechanic at Perdock Inc. He owned a service station and for thirty-nine years owned and operated John Johnson Sanitation in Washington. He retired in 1990 and was resident of the Parkview Home in Fairfield since 2000. He enjoying racing, watching baseball and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Washington; four sons, Ernest Johnson and wife Linda of Brighton, Jerry Johnson and wife Sue of Washington, Jim Johnson and wife Laurie of West Chester, Joe Johnson and wife Jean of Washington; three daughters, Mary Kay Beal of Oklahoma City OK, Deette Beal and husband Darrell of Brighton and Nancy Tapely of What Cheer, IA; two sisters, Laura Riggs and husband Jim of St. Joseph, MO and Nancy Johnson of Burlington, IA; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul and Ralph, sister Ruth Harter, son-in-law Roger Beal, grandson Jason Shafer and infant great-grandson Dylan Tapley.
