John Alden Dawson, 68 of Washington, died Friday morning, October 28, 2005 at the Washington County Hospital following declining health.
Funeral Services have been set for 1:30 P.M. Monday, October 31, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Sunday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 in the evening. Memorials in the name of John A. Dawson may be designated to the United Methodist Church, Washington Co. Hospital or Hospice of Washington County.
John was born November 14, 1936 in Washington, Iowa the son of Clyde Raymond and Alma Elvina (Leeper) Dawson. He graduated from Washington High School in 1954. John served with the U.S. Army in Germany in the early 60s and also with the Army Reserve. On June 23, 1963 John was united in marriage to Mary Ellen DuVall at the Calvary Baptist Church in Davenport, Iowa.
He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. John was a postal clerk from 1966 till 1992 and was co-owner of J&M Shoe Repair from 1975 until the present. John was also involved with the NRA, Wadcutters Handgun Club and the American Legion Post #0029. He enjoyed shooting, reading, dancing, and being with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Washington, daughters Ruth Craig and husband Earl of Washington, Sue Ellen Hedstrom and Fiancé Doug Ripsom of Gaithersburg, Maryland and “adopted” daughter, Jennine Wolf of Washington; brother Clyde Dawson Jr. and wife Patricia of Washington; sister in law Martha Wood of Edgington, IL; three grandchildren Courtney, Cameron and Chloe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Harold and great nephew Michael Johnson.
