Janice Marie (Krall, Isabel) Hazelett, 74, of Washington, IA, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2015, from complications of Pancreatic Cancer at the McCreedy Home in Washington.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, from noon – 7 p.m. at the Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Her body will be cremated following the service, as per her request, and a small graveside service will be held at a later date for family and close, personal friends at the West Branch Cemetery in West Branch, IA. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Riders or the American Cancer Society: Washington Relay For Life.
Jan was born on June 26, 1941, at her parents’ homesteader farm in Arlington, IA, in Fayette County. She was the daughter of Freddie and Ruby (Breitsprecher) Klingman and had two older brothers: Loy (Janis Schmidt) Klingman and Roger (Eileen) Klingman. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1959, attended Wartburg College for one year, and then transferred to Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids, IA, where she graduated with a degree in cosmetology.
On November 25, 1961, she married Richard Allen Krall of West Branch, IA; they settled down on a farm north of town and farmed side by side for 29 years until his death in 1990. She also operated Jan’s Beauty Shop for 33 years. They had two children: Mark (Marty) Krall of Solon, IA, (daughters Ashley and Camille); and Karina Krall of Atalissa, IA.
In 1992, she married William A. Isabel (“Isy”). They built a log home together and moved to their acreage outside of Atalissa just before he was killed in 1994.
On December 15, 2004, she married Paul G. Hazelett of Washington, IA, and relocated there, where she remained until her death. She had six step-children: Beth (Mike) Houseal of Wellman, IA; Susan Hyde of Pierston, IN; John (Teresa) Hazelett of Ainsworth, IA; Jeff (Kim) Hazelett of Washington, IA; Jim (Bridgett) Hazelett of Columbus, OH; and Jason Hazelett of Washington, IA.
A skilled farm wife and beautician, Jan also worked at several clerical jobs over the years, including at ACT, BP Feeds, City Carton Co., Sauer Danfoss, the Iowa City School District, Diehl Law Offices, and EBD (Engineered Building Design).
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch, and Peace Lutheran Church in Clayton, IA. She taught Bible School, sang in the choir, was a member of Luther League, held several church offices over the years, and was a Church Council member.
Jan was also a member of the West Branch Study Club (Federated), Pillars (WHCH gift shop volunteer), American Legion Auxiliary, and the American Legion Riders.
She enjoyed reading, watching TV/movies, gardening, animals (especially kitties), cooking/baking, pontooning on the Mississippi river, going to the Clayton cabin, playing cards/cribbage, traveling on the trike with Paul, eating ice cream, and shopping at the “GW Boutique.” She was known by her friends and family to be a hard-working, fun-loving woman with a zest for life.
She is survived by her husband Paul; all her children and step-children; two granddaughters, 23 step-grandchildren, 10 step-great grandchildren, and two step-great great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law Roger and Eileen Klingman of Nashua, IA; seven sisters-in-law including, Janis Schmitz (Loy Klingman) of Cedar Rapids, Barb (Chuck) Krall of West Branch, DeAnna (Larry) Lear of North Liberty, Barb (Jerry) Wood of Rochester, IA, Cathy (Bob) Isabel of Rochester, Betty (Jerold) Holt of Indianola, IA and Myrna (Don) Tappan of Leesburg, FL; one brother-in-law Bill Hazelett of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Ruby, her brother Loy, her first husband Dick, her second husband Isy, a nephew Brett Wood, and a niece Kathy Klingman.
