James “Jim” L. Barnes, 77 of Washington died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Washington Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, Nov 15 at 2:30PM at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in rural Brighton with Rev. Sally Graves and Rev. Linda Foor officiating. Open visitation will be held from 1-4PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington on Friday, November 14. The family will not be present.
At Jim’s request, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Washington Care Center Activity Dept., Brighton United Church or Alzheimer’s Research
Jim Barnes was born on August 9, 1931 in Fairfield, IA the son of Keith and Viola (Stout) Barnes. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1949 and served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1950 – 1954. On August 14, 1955 he was united in marriage to Donna Smith at the First Christian Church in Fairfield. Jim farmed in Washington County all of his life. He was a member of the Brighton United Church, the Antique Car Club and served on the board of the Washington County Pork Producers. He was a 4-H leader and enjoyed farming, restoring Ford vehicles, fishing and nature.
Survivors include his wife, Donna of Brighton, one son David Barnes of Washington, two daughters, Jo Barnes of Marion, IA., Linda and husband Larry Steenhoek of Prairie City, IA, four grandchildren, Ryan Barnes, Nicole Sieren, Timothy Barnes, and John McGill and one great granddaughter, Maddison Sieren.
Also surviving is one brother, Ben Barnes of Iowa City.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents.
