J. Sandburg

October 12, 1926 — August 21, 2006

J. Dean Sandburg, 79 of Washington, died Monday, August 21, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness.

Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Kelly Allard officiating. Burial will be in the Swedesburg Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will begin at Noon Wednesday at the Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6-8:00 in the evening. Memorials in the name of Dean Sandburg have been established to the American Diabetes Association.

Dean was born October 12, 1926 in Noble, IA the son of John Florian and Signe Marie (Alvine) Sandburg. He graduated from Olds High School in 1944 and served in the Navy on the USS Oklahoma during WWII in the Asian theater. He attended Iowa State in Ames after WWII and returned home to help on the farm. He was united in marriage to Norma Horak October 26, 1952 at the Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Dean was a life long farmer in the Ainsworth and Winfield area. He was a faithful member and elder of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Washington County Cattlemen, Washington Republican Party, Ainsworth Lions, American Legion and the Washington Diabetes Association. He enjoyed auctions, horse and cattle sales and sports.

Survivors include his wife Norma of Washington, sons Robert Sandburg and wife Joni of Washington, Richard Sandburg and wife Angie of Ainsworth, daughter Kari Green and husband Doug of Iowa City; sisters, LaVonne Hinkle and husband John of Winfield and Doris Sears of Woodward, IA; eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Chuck and brother Marlin.
