Ida "Dorothy" A. (Skubal) Scherrer, 93, of Iowa City, died peacefully in her sleep with family by her side on Friday, September 12, 2014 at Legacy Gardens Special Memory Unit in Iowa City, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 15, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside with Father David Brownfield officiating. Visitation will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Sunday, September 14 with a Prayer Service at 4PM and visitation following until 7PM. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice Compassus of Cedar Rapids.
Dorothy (as she preferred to be called) was born May 21, 1921 in rural Riverside, the daughter of Frederick and Ida (Shradel) Skubal. She married Paul M. Scherrer on June 23, 1955. Dorothy graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1938. She attended Iowa City Commercial College in Iowa City. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of Zeta Chi Chapter of the Alpha Iota Sorority, International Honorary Business Sorority, July 28, 1947. She worked for Dr. Erwin G. Gross at the University of Iowa Pharmacology Department from 1940 through 1948. She worked as secretary for English River Concentrates, Inc. from 1964 through 1983 when she retired. Dorothy was a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years and had many interests, including gardening, bowling, crocheting, playing cards, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, cooking and baking and visiting with family and friends. Dorothy will be deeply missed by her family, friends and caregivers at Legacy.
Survivors include her husband Paul, a son, Edward (Deb) Scherrer of North Liberty, a daughter, Maureen (Leonard) Corpman of Cedar Falls, and a son, Michael (Coleen) Scherrer of Riverside. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Shirley (Virgil) Scherrer.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents, an infant son, four brothers, Frederick Skubal, Jr., twins, Francis (Rosemary) Skubal, Charles (Maxine) Skubal, Joseph Skubal, and a daughter, Janice (Scherrer) Grimm.
