Herbert L. Brunk, 92 of Washington, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following declining health.

Funeral Services have been set for 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Colton Clay officiating. Following the service his body will be cremated, with Graveside Services, 11:00 AM Friday, February 11, 2011 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa with military honors. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Tuesday at the Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 PM. A memorial in the name of Herbert L. Brunk has been established to Paws and More or the American Legion Post #29.

Herbert was born September 29, 1918 in Davis Co., Iowa the son of Sam Sr. and Laura (Hall) Brunk. He served in the US Army during WWII in the European theater. Following the War he was united in marriage to Avis Stirts, May 4, 1946 in Kansas City, Mo.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Teamsters Union Local # 147 of Des Moines, life member of the VFW and American Legion. Herbert worked thirty-one years for the Rock Island Motor Freight. Lived eighteen years in Texas following his work at Rock Island Motor Freight and retired to Washington in 1995.

He enjoyed camping, dancing and auto racing.

Survivors include son Ron Brunk and friend Margaret of Ottumwa; daughter in law Carla Brunk of Washington; brother Sam Brunk, Jr. of Des Moines; three grandchildren Ryan, Betsy and Micah; six great-grandchildren Morgan, Ella, Sean, Katlyn, Madison and Athena.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Avis September 27, 2001, son Phillip December 18, 2005, three brothers and three sisters.
