Hazel Elizabeth Kaufman, 97 of Wayland, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:00 AM Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Sue Meade officiating. Burial will be in the North Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Friday at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 4-7:00 PM. Memorials in the name of Hazel Elizabeth Kaufman may be designated to the Parkview Home in Wayland.
Hazel was born December 2, 1911 in Washington Co. Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Smidth) Conrad. She was united in marriage to Andy Kaufman on June 9, 1928 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She helped her husband on the farm, and enjoyed gardening, reading, canning, decorating and wrote the “South O Town” column in the Wayland News. Hazel also enjoyed clipping and saving newspaper articles about family and friends and had been doing so since 1932.
Survivors include children, LeRoy Kaufman and wife Carolyn of Wayland, Lois Fields and husband Gene of Riverside, Raymond Kaufman of Mt. Pleasant, Louise Piper of West Point and Robert Kaufman of Lockridge; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Andy in 1977, two sisters Anna Mae Lauber and Bessie Raggio; two brothers, Cloyce and Will and a grandson Mike.
