Harold Lee Gilmere, 82 of Washington, died Sunday, November 28, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital.
A Celebration of his life will be 10:30 AM Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor James Cluney officiating. . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Funeral Home. His body has been cremated and the family will have a private graveside at the Elm Grove Cemetery with full military honors with the American Legion Post #29. A memorial fund has been established for the All Veteran’s Memorial in Washington and the American Legion.
Harold Lee Gilmere was born November 29, 1927 in Ottumwa, Iowa the son of Leslie Howe and Alameda (Dunnington) Gilmere. The family moved to Washington when Harold was young, and he graduated from Washington High School. Harold entered the United States Army on October 1, 1946 and was discharged on March 10, 1948. On July 5, 1953 he was united in marriage to Susan Reschly in Washington.
Harold was a lifelong Washington resident and worked as a mechanic at the Gilmere Shell Service Station, Rod’s Service Center, Lawn and Leisure, was janitor at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, and drove the Washington County Mini Bus for over 17 years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a past member of the Optimist Club of Washington, past Commander of the American Legion, served on the Blair House Board, was a cub scout and boy scout leader, and had taken part in several Appalachian Service Project trips. Harold enjoyed working on gasoline engines, building model airplanes, collecting model John Deere tractors, fishing and scout camping.
Survivors include his wife Susan of Washington, three sons and spouses, Joseph ( Deb) Gilmere of Washington, Jerrold (Julie) Gilmere of Washington, Jack (Beth) Gilmere of Henderson, NV and five grandchildren, Amanda, Megan and Kristen Gilmere, Aaron Eyman and Adrienne Gilmere.
Preceding Harold in death were his parents.
