Gordon Secrest

Gordon Secrest, 77 of Washington died Sunday evening, April 11, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a short illness.


Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with the Rev. Fr. Paul Appel officiating. Burial will follow at the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery near Richmond. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 4-7:00 PM in the evening with a rosary at 7:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County and St. James Catholic Church.


Gordon Francis Secrest was born September 7, 1932 in Omaha, NE the son of William Ross and Hilda Mary (Escher) Secrest. He was united in marriage to Vada Marie Barr at St. James Catholic Church in Washington on September 24, 1953. He was employed as an appliance repairman at Iowa Southern Utilities for 28 years and as a technical engineer at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for 12 years. He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, was involved with Boy Scouts with his sons for many years and was in the National Guard for three years.


Survivors include his wife Vada of Washington, seven children and their spouses, Angela Kay Secrest of Waller, TX., Daniel Ray (Cynthia) Secrest of Washington, IA, Rollin Joseph (Donna) Secrest of Riverside, CA, Mary Cecelia Walker of Boone, IA, Kevin Thomas (Martha) Secrest of Haslet, TX, Sarah (Roger) Lillie of Washington, IA, Jenny Ann Kimmel of Bondurant, IA, 22 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.


Preceding Gordon in death were his parents and one infant brother, Rollin Joseph Secrest.
