Gladys Marie Widmer, 96 of Wayland, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Parkview Home in Wayland following declining health.
Graveside Services have been set for 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery with Pastor Kelly Slagel officiating. Family Visitation will be from 2:30 PM till the service time at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church on Wednesday. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers or gifts the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did. Donations may be sent to anyone in need.
Gladys was born April 26, 1913 in Wayland, Iowa the daughter of Peter J. and Lydia Katherine (Orendorff) Roth. She graduated from Wayland High School in 1930 and was united in marriage to Henry Widmer June 26, 1932 in Wayland at the home of Simon Gingerich.
Gladys was a faithful member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church where she joined at age 11 in 1925. She was active as a Sunday and Bible School teacher. Gladys and her husband farmed near Wayland for 35 years and later owned and operated the Widmer Meat Plant for 25 years. She was a member of the Progress Club, Henry County Farm Bureau Women’s group and a 4-H leader. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, quilting and listening to books on tape.
Survivors include her daughter Melba Widmer of Cedar Falls, Iowa and sister in law Evelyn Roth, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry January 8, 1996, son Richard Leon, June 6, 2003, five brothers, Clarence, Milton, Lloyd, Orval and Allen, sister Alma and granddaughter Cindy.
