A celebration of life for George T. Widmer 66, of Washington will be held Friday, March 18 at 11:00AM at the Church of Jesus Christ LDS in Washington with President Doug Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 17 from noon to 8PM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington where the family will greet friends from 5-8PM. A memorial fund for the NAMDRA Scholarship Fund has been established. George Widmer died Monday, March 14 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City following a brief illness.
George Thomas Widmer was born August 5, 1944 in Washington, IA the son of Jeanne and Glenn (Honsie) Widmer and Chester McChurch. He graduated from Washington High School in 1962. In October of that year George joined the United States Air Force and served for 21 years until 1984. On June 10, 1967 he was united in marriage to Janice L. Sines in Washington. After retiring from the Air Force, George owned and operated George’s Auto Salvage in Ainsworth from 1984 – 1991. He then owned and operated George’s Auto Parts in Washington until 2000. From 2000 – 2005 he owned and operated the Bit of Everything furniture and antique store in Washington. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ LDS, the Washington American Legion and NAMDRA/AMC Car Club. George enjoyed cars, racing, genealogy and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife Janice of Washington, three children, Jay Santana of Washington, Janel Ferguson and fiancé Dan Price of Marion, IA, James (Michelle) Widmer of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, nine grandchildren, Justin Widmer, Lacey and Allie Bruns, Abbey and Karl Tisor, Kylie, Heath, Jacob and Caleb Davidson, four brothers, John (Karla) Widmer of Fairfield, IA, Joe (Becky) McChurch of Altoona, IA, Jack (Cindy) McChurch of Spring, TX, Bill (Mary) McChurch of Des Moines, IA, four sisters, Avis (Charles) Smith of Webster City, IA, Ann Moore of Washington, IA, Jill (James) Hobbs of Coweta, OK, and Susan (Adolf) Spencer of McCallsburg, IA.
Preceding George in death were his parents and and infant brother.
