Eugene Reed

Eugene P. Reed, 81 of Washington died Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Halcyon House following declining health.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, June 13, 2008 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Ed O’ Meila officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin at Noon Thursday at the Beatty Funeral Home with family present from 5-8:00 PM. A rosary will be at 6:00 PM and a Vigil Service at 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Funeral Home. Memorials in the name of Eugene Reed may be designated to the Parkinson’s Association or St. James Catholic Church.

Eugene was born July 6, 1926 in Richland, Iowa the son of Walter John and Margaret Mary (Hammes) Reed. He graduated from Keota High School in 1944 and was united in marriage to Marcella Margaret Haupert on November 26, 1954 at St. Elizabeth Church in Harper.

Eugene was a faithful member of the St. James Catholic Church, Parish Council, Eucharist Minister, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, District Deputy and Grand Knight. He was a School Board Member and on the City of Washington Zoning Commission. He was also a member of the Corn and Soybean Association and the Keota FFA. He enjoyed dancing, music, playing cards, visiting with anyone that would listen, traveling, reading and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife Marcella of Washington; children Mary Ellen Reed of Tiffin, IA, Phil Reed and wife Susie of Washington, Joseph Reed of Carter Lake, IA and Ann Reed of Iowa City, IA; brothers, Cletus Reed and wife Audrey of Washington, Hubert Reed and wife Chris of Davenport, IA, James Reed and wife Arbie of Keota, IA, Edmund Reed and wife Janice of Keota, IA and Daniel Reed and wife Mary of South English, IA; sister Rose Ellen Stelton of Washington and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joanne Luttenegger, three nephews and one niece.
