A Celebration of Life for Ethel V. Dayton, 92, of Washington will be held Sunday, May 26, 2019, at 2 PM at the United Presbyterian Home Dining Hall in Washington. Ethel donated her body to the University of Iowa Anatomical Department. A general memorial fund has been established. Ethel Dayton died Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Ethel Viola Scalf was born January 7, 1927, in Green Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Merton and Lydia (Miller) Scalf. She graduated from Wellman High School and attained her teacher’s certification while in high school. She taught at Maple Grove Rural School. On September 21, 1944, she was united in marriage to Don Dayton in Cedar Rapids. While Don served in the military Ethel went to cosmetology school in Brooklyn, New York. After returning to Iowa the couple owned and operated Dayton’s Beauty Salon in Washington for 21 years and then started the Burlington Beauty Academy and later the Keokuk Beauty Academy which they operated for 30 years. Ethel enjoyed bowling and playing golf.
Survivors include her husband Don of Washington, granddaughter Kaela Alecock, and two great-grandchildren: Kamari and Riley all of Savanah, Georgia. Also surviving are her sister Evelyn (Bob) Benninger of Muskegon, Michigan, and her brother Daniel (Linda) Scalf of Centerville, Minnesota.
Preceding Ethel in death were her parents, her son Jim Dayton and six siblings: Louisa Stewart, Carolyn Peck, Iva Redlinger, Calvin Scalf, Doris Hayes, and George Scalf.
